The history of the Bergen Avenue route is marked by a sudden transition in management. Originally operated by Bergen Avenue IBOA (Independent Bus Operators Association), the service came to an abrupt halt on March 12, 2011, after the operator failed to make an insurance payment.
To prevent a total loss of service for commuters, the New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) granted emergency operating authority to A&C Bus Corporation. A&C began service on March 16, 2011. While fares remained unchanged, the company implemented a modified schedule, operating every half-hour from 6:30 AM to 10:00 PM.
Although the former owners of Bergen Avenue IBOA expressed a desire to sell the operating rights, the NJDOT ruled that those rights had ceased when the company stopped operating without warning to the passengers.
The Rise and Fall of Route 4
Route 4 served as a vital link between Curries Woods and Newport Centre Mall, traveling through Ocean Avenue, Pacific Avenue, Communipaw Junction, and Grove Street Station. This route had a complex operational history, having been run by Red & Tan in Hudson County until November 6, 2011.
A&C Bus Corporation took over the service shortly after, operating the segment between Greenville and Newport Centre Mall. However, due to low ridership, A&C discontinued Route 4 on March 2, 2019.
Following the discontinuation, New Jersey Transit stepped in to fill the gap. NJ Transit Route 86 was extended to cover part of the service, and Route 1 was rerouted on June 22, 2019, to replace service along Pacific and Communipaw Avenues.
