Historical Evolution
Established in 1920 by a decree of the French commissioner, the Beirut Stock Exchange is the second oldest market in the region. In its early years, trading focused primarily on currency and gold. However, the 1930s saw a surge in investment from local Lebanese, Syrian, and French sources. This era was marked by the creation of mixed Lebanese-French joint stock companies that were listed simultaneously in both Beirut and Paris.
The exchange experienced significant growth during the 1950s and 1960s, expanding its listings to include industrial, banking, and service companies, as well as approximately 50 listed bonds. This prosperity was interrupted by the Lebanese Civil War in 1975, which led to a sharp decline in activity and a total halt of trading by 1983.
Modernization and Recovery
After a decade of suspension, the government re-launched the BSE in 1994. Working in collaboration with the Bourse de Paris, the exchange introduced a new internal bylaw and streamlined trading mechanisms. A pivotal shift occurred with the introduction of an automated brokers system, replacing traditional OTC (Over-the-Counter) voice brokers with a fixing price system. Trading officially resumed in the exchange hall on November 22, 1996.
Further technological advancements followed, including a cooperation agreement with the Bourse de Paris in 1999 and the implementation of the European NSC-UNIX-Euronext system. By 2000, the BSE expanded its offerings to include GDRs (Global Depository Receipts), preferred stocks, priority shares, investment fund shares, and other tradable derivatives. In 2006, a Remote Trading System was launched, allowing brokers to execute trades from their own offices.
In 2017, the Lebanese Council of Ministers moved toward privatization, approving a decree to establish the Beirut Stock Exchange SAL (BSE SAL) as a joint-stock company to replace the previous public structure.
