Development and Expansion Phases

Phase 1: The Foundation

Phase 2: Southern Extension

Opened on January 30, 2016, Phase 2 extended the line south to serve Suji-gu in Yongin and Gwanggyo New Town in Suwon. This phase was critical for residents of Suji-gu, an area that developed organically with large apartment complexes and suffered from heavy road congestion. A notable feature of this phase is the Gwanggyo Jungang (Ajou Univ.) station, which includes an underground bus transfer station with screen doors for seamless transit.

Phase 3 and Future Extensions

Phase 3 focused on northern expansion. The section from Gangnam to Sinsa opened on May 28, 2022. Further extension from Sinsa to Yongsan is planned, though it is expected to open no earlier than 2027 due to complexities involving the Yongsan Garrison and potential track sharing with the GTX A line.

Additionally, Phase 4 is planned to extend the line southwest to Hwaseo and Homaesil stations in Suwon, with an expected opening date no earlier than 2027.
