The Process of Digital Modeling

To create the animation, Catmull used his own left hand as the subject. The process began with a physical plaster-of-Paris mold of his hand—an experience that famously resulted in him accidentally pulling out the hair on the back of his hand during removal. From this mold, he created a plaster model and manually drew 350 small triangles and polygons in ink across the surface.

These polygons served as the blueprint for the digital model. Catmull and fellow student Fred Parke spent hours measuring the coordinates of every corner point of these polygons and manually entering the data into a machine using a Teletype keyboard. Using a custom 3D animation program written by Catmull, they were able to render the disembodied hand on a screen and animate its movement.

While Catmull focused on the hand, Fred Parke contributed a computer animation of his wife's face, which also appears in the film. Additionally, fellow student Bob Ingebretsen was responsible for creating the 3D titles seen in the final credits.

Capturing the Image

The final stage of production—transferring digital images to physical film—was an arduous task. Because the display hardware of the era could not show an entire image on the screen at once, Catmull had to use a long-exposure Polaroid camera to take snapshots of the screen to review his frames. Once the animation was finalized, the team used a 35mm camera, specially rigged by the department, to photograph the images directly from a CRT (Cathode Ray Tube) screen.
